NEUROLOGY:
- Electroencephalography
- Evoked Potentials
- Nerve Conduction
Neurophysiology
is concerned with the investigation of function in the central
and peripheral nervous system. Neurophysiologists work in
neurophysiology and are specialist practitioners that
investigate the function of the nervous system to diagnose and
monitor neurological disorders, including epilepsy, strokes,
dementia, nerve and muscle dysfunction and multiple sclerosis
and can assist in the diagnosis and management of behavioural
conditions.
They work directly with inpatients and outpatients of all ages
(neonates, babies, children, adults and the elderly), usually
in dedicated environments, intensive care settings and in the
operating theatre. The care of these patients is
multidisciplinary and can be complicated so the practitioner
needs effective communication and team working skills.
Neurophysiology
is a specialist field that develops quickly and where
increasingly high technology and computerisation are employed.
Investigations range from various modalities of
electroencephalography (EEG) to nerve conduction studies (NCS)
to evoked potentials (EP) and so the neurophysiologist
requires a high degree of accuracy and careful attention to
detail.
